The new special edition of the WRX will debut in prototype form at the Tokyo Auto Salon
Subaru announced its lineup for the Tokyo Auto Salon 2024, which doesn’t come sort of STI emblems. The most interesting exhibit is the Subaru WRX S4 STI Sport♯ prototype which previews a special edition of the performance sedan with handling upgrades. The model is destined for a limited production run, and will most likely remain a Japan-only affair.
The automaker published a single teaser shot of the WRX S4 STI Sport♯, focusing on its tail. The prototype is based on the Subaru WRX S4 STI Sport R EX which is the flagship trim level of the WRX in Japan. However, it appears to ride on a new set of BBS-style wheels, while the ducktail spoiler on the trunk looks slightly different. Finally, the WRX, S4, and Symmetrical AWD emblems are finished in black instead of chrome.
We don’t know if the special edition will feature other special touches on the exterior and the interior, but judging from the description, there will be a few changes under the skin. Subaru promised that the WRX S4 STI Sport♯, will offer “enhanced handling” and a “premium drive feel” hinting at chassis upgrades. Changes are there won’t be any tweaks on the powertrain, as all versions of the JDM-Spec Subaru WRX are fitted with the same turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder boxer. The mill produces 271 hp (202 kW / 275 PS) and 375 Nm (276.6 lb-ft) of torque and is exclusively mated to a CVT automatic sending power to all four wheels with the help of Subaru’s symmetrical AWD system.
Subaru will also showcase a customized example of the BRZ STI Sport with a carbon rear spoiler, and the Levorg Layback STI Характеристики featuring several sporty-looking accessories. The rest of the lineup for this year’s Tokyo Auto Salon will include a trio of racecars – the BRZ GT300 from the Super GT championship, the Team SDA Engineering BRZ CNF Concept from the Super Taikyu Series 2023, and the WRX NBR Challenge 2024.
We will learn more about the aforementioned models at the Tokyo Auto Salon 2024, or a bit earlier than that on Subaru’s dedicated website. The show will take place between January 12 and 14 at the Makuhari Messe in Chiba.
